On April 12, the Blue Frog Coffeehouse, 64 Main St., will kick off a five-show series that highlights internationally and locally known folk artists. The first show featuress singer-songwriters Charlie King and Colleen Kattau. Cover is $5 at the door for the 8 p.m. show.

The Folk Series at the Blue Frog Coffeehouse is supported by The New York State Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. Through a collaboration with SUNY Cortland, the Center for the Arts in Homer and the Cortland Downtown Partnership, the Folk Series at the Blue Frog Coffeehouse is helping to bring live music to Cortland.

Charlie King and Colleen Kattau sing with a common passion that makes you believe the world can be saved by beauty. Their songs are like flowers growing from the hard soil of political realities, rooted in the belief that music can cultivate a new reality by embodying visions in song. Best known for the work they do independent of each other, they've been sporadically performing together since 1993. The common repertoire they've developed is rich, harmonious and brimful with comic relief.

Charlie has been at the heart of American folk music for over 40 years. His songs have been recorded and sung by other performers such as Pete Seeger, Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, John McCutcheon, Arlo Guthrie, Peggy Seeger, Chad Mitchell and Judy Small. Honors include an "Indie" award for one of the top three folk recordings of 1984. In May of 1998 the War Resisters League gave their Peacemaker Award to Charlie and to Odetta. Pete Seeger nominated Charlie for the Sacco-Vanzetti Social Justice Award, which he received in November 1999.

He has recorded a dozen solo albums since 1976, as well as three albums with the touring ensemble Bright Morning Star, and numerous compilation albums with other artists. Since 2001 he has released 5 duo CDs with his partner, Karen Brandow.

Colleen is a bi-lingual singer songwriter. She performs original alternative acoustic music. Her voice can be both strong and tender and has been likened to that of Joni Mitchell, Natalie Merchant, and Shawn Colvin. Colleen has performed at colleges and universities, women's and environmental festivals, and Latin American and labor solidarity events. She solos and also plays with her band, Night Skies. Colleen combines music and activism, recognizing the guitarra armada or 'armed guitar' concept of Latin American troubadours where the guitar and voice are mightier than the gun.

Her recordings include About Time, Wideland and Sing it Down: Songs to Close the SOA, co-recorded with compa' Jolie Rickman.
